Rollers
in the U.S. are mainly from Great Brittan. Specifically what is called the black
hills area around Birmingham England. Roller pigeon descendant from these
pigeons are called Birmingham Rollers. Of course there are those, as there
always are, that say a Birmingham Roller must be or not be a specific color,
size shape etc. to be a "true" Birmingham Roller. Of course this is nonsense and
completely untrue. There are clubs dedicated to certain families of Birmingham
Rollers as well. The Pensom Roller club for instance is such a club. Members
must keep the family "pure" to even become a member. This all has it's good
points and bad. The truth is, if a pigeon rolls in the correct fashion and the
correct speed and depth, it earns itself the right to be called a roller no
matter the pigeons heritage.
Today's rollers are a very special breed indeed. They are a good breed for the beginner and the experienced as well. Some families are much harder to work with than others and depending on the intentions of the individual breeder as to what he will breed the birds for, competition or just personal enjoyment, those intentions will dictate what type of training will be necessary for the pigeons as well as the breeder.
There are more than a few roller clubs both national and local. The National Birmingham Roller Club, also known as the NBRC is an established club in the U.S.. along with them are many others as I have stated. Joining or associating one's self with a club has many benefits that make not joining seem a bit silly. Simply stated, find a join a club or group of roller people.
